Dr. Lovallo is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand surgery. He performed Virginia’s first reverse total shoulder replacement over a decade ago and now performs over 150 shoulder replacements annually, more than any other orthopaedic surgeon in the D.C. Metropolitan area. Due to a unique infection prevention protocol, Dr. Lovallo has not had a shoulder replacement infection since 2007.

A Connecticut native, Dr. Lovallo received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut and completed a hand surgery fellowship at Havard Medical School. He was Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut before moving to the Washington, DC area.

Dr. Lovallo currently serves as the Surgical Director of the Inova Shoulder Replacement Program and as an upper extremity specialist for the Washington Redskins. He was named a 2013 Washington Post Super Doctor by his peers and a Washingtonian Magazine 2009 Top Doctor.

A founding member of the Mid-Atlantic Shoulder and Elbow Society, Dr. Lovallo now shares his expertise with other surgeons. He has created an educational video on total shoulder replacement and travels both nationally and internationally teaching modern shoulder replacement techniques. He is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, a consultant for DePuy medical (the leading total shoulder joint replacement company in the US), and has been published in DeLee and Drez’s Orthopaedic Sports Medicine textbook as well as in peer reviewed scientific journals. Most recently he was the senior author on a publication in the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery entitled, “Intraoperative Intra-Articular Injection of Gentamicin: Will it decrease the risk of infection in total shoulder arthroplasty?” The research for the publication spanned over a six year timeframe and consisted of 507 total shoulder arthroplasty procedures, all of which were performed by Dr. Lovallo. In the fall of 2014, Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital adopted the infection prevention proctocol discussed in the paper.

In his spare time, Dr. Lovallo enjoys spending time with his family as well as activities such as golf, skiing, reading, chess and coaching his son’s sports teams. Dr. Lovallo has a deep level of concern and empathy for his patients. He states, “One of the things that I am proudest of is the level of personal concern for our patients. I think that has to be foremost in a physician’s mind.”
