On May 16, members of the Anderson Orthopaedic Clinic team had the privilege of participating in the STEM for Her Health Sciences Career Fair hosted at Mary Riley Styles Public Library, located in Falls Church.
The event welcomed more than 60 young attendees for an afternoon focused on exploration, mentorship, and opportunity within the healthcare field. While the event primarily encouraged young girls to pursue interests in STEM and health sciences, it created an inspiring and inclusive environment for all youth interested in learning more about careers in healthcare.
For our team, it was incredibly rewarding to share not only what we do every day, but also the many different paths that can lead to a meaningful and successful career in healthcare.
Meet the Healthcare Professionals Behind Patient Care
Representatives from several areas across our organization participated in the event, including X-Ray & Imaging, Physical and Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistants, Registered Nurses, Medical Assistants, Pharmacy, Practice Leadership, and Physicians. Each station gave attendees the opportunity to learn more about the unique role each department plays in patient care and day-to-day healthcare operations.
Exploring Careers in Healthcare Through Hands-On Learning
To make the experience interactive and engaging, attendees received a “Health Fair Passport” that was stamped after visiting each station. This encouraged participants to explore a variety of healthcare careers while asking questions, learning new skills, and connecting directly with professionals in the field.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Healthcare Leaders
One of the most meaningful messages shared throughout the event was that healthcare is truly a team effort. Every role within an organization contributes to the patient experience and helps keep operations running smoothly. From clinical staff and providers to operations and leadership, every individual plays an important part in delivering quality patient care.
The event also created an opportunity to encourage young people to believe in their potential and understand that success can look different for everyone. While some healthcare careers require advanced degrees and formal education, others are built through experience, mentorship, hands-on learning, and perseverance. We wanted attendees to leave knowing that there are many paths to building a fulfilling future in healthcare.
Most importantly, the event highlighted the importance of representation and community engagement. Seeing women thriving in healthcare, science, leadership, and operations can be incredibly impactful for young girls exploring future career possibilities. Events like these help inspire confidence, curiosity, and ambition in the next generation of healthcare professionals.
Due to the overwhelming community response and success of the event, additional STEM for Her opportunities were announced for later this spring – further highlighting the growing interest in healthcare and STEM education among local youth.
