Stop Living with Hip Pain

Hip replacement surgery is a safe and effective procedure that can relieve your pain, increase motion, and help you get back to enjoying normal, everyday activities.

First performed in 1960, hip replacement surgery is one of the most successful operations in all of medicine. Since 1960, improvements in joint replacement surgical techniques and technology have greatly increased the effectiveness of total hip replacement.

Understanding Hip Replacement Surgery

Total Hip Replacement is a widely performed surgery, aiming to relieve pain and enhance mobility in individuals with conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis and other hip-related issues.

When replacing a hip, surgeons use different approaches to access it. The most common is the posterior approach from the back of the hip, while a smaller incision is the mini posterior approach. Another option is the anterior approach from the front of the hip. Each approach has its pros and cons, and choosing the best one for you should involve a discussion with your surgeon.

Pain management following total hip replacement surgery has significantly improved over the past decade or so. Advances such as the widespread use of regional nerve blocks, spinal blocks, and various other techniques have played a key role in enhancing pain control. Additionally, the introduction of early range of motion exercises and rapid rehabilitation protocols has been instrumental in reducing initial stiffness and discomfort, making the overall procedure considerably less painful than in previous years.

After hip replacement surgery, most patients can resume most daily activities within four to six weeks. By three months, they regain lost strength and endurance, enabling unrestricted daily activities. Initially, hospital-based therapy is provided, followed by home healthcare with a physical therapist. This post-surgery therapy focuses on walking, stretching, and thigh muscle strengthening, which many patients can continue on their own.

Benefits of Hip Surgery

Pain Relief and Improved Function

In most cases a patient can expect to be relatively pain-free, have full mobility of the hip, and walk with minimal or no limp following recovery.

Prevent Further Joint Damage

Hip replacement surgery can prevent the progression of joint damage and deformities associated with conditions like arthritis and related conditions.

Enhanced Quality of Life

Many individuals experience an improved overall quality of life after hip replacement surgery, as they can engage in activities they previously avoided due to pain and limited mobility.

Decreased Medication Dependency

After surgery, patients may require fewer pain medications, reducing the risks associated with long-term use of pain relieving medications.

Improved Mobility

The surgery can restore the natural range of motion and function of the hip joint, allowing patients to walk, climb stairs, and perform daily activities with greater ease.

Increased Independence

With reduced pain and improved mobility, patients often regain their independence and require less assistance with daily tasks.

Is Hip Replacement Surgery Right For You?

When hip pain impairs your quality of life, it may be time for hip replacement surgery. Indicators include:

  • Sleep disruption due to pain
  • Challenges in daily tasks
  • Limited participation in enjoyable activities

Initially, your doctor may suggest treatments like pain relief medication, mobility aids, joint injections, and physical therapy. If these options don’t alleviate your pain and stiffness, hip replacement can restore function and enhance your quality of life.

Patient Testimonials

My experience with the Anderson Clinic has been as wonderful as possible. Nobody ever wants to go through a surgical procedure that is predetermined to be quite painful. However, I feel that I was properly prepared and made as comfortable as possible. Everybody that was involved in my care from the receptionist, clinical team to the surgeon have been a joy to work with. There is a reason why their reputation is so good.

I can’t imagine a better experience with a hip replacement than I’ve had with [Anderson Orthopaedics]. I had the surgery (anterior approach) eight days ago; In the OR by 7:45 and back home by 5:00. Recovery so far has been amazing. Packed the walker away yesterday and am now using just a cane for stability. No pain at all in the joint and just some occasional stinging around the incision. I had dreaded having this procedure done, but now wish I hadn’t waited so long.

Everett

I have been so impressed with this organization. I was in and out the same day and my recovery time was minuscule. I can hardly tell I had a replacement on my left hip. My follow up appointments have gone well and the staff is professional and courteous.
